Joint Statement v2

Joint Statement: Muslim Community Rejects Abbott Government’s Demonisation and Condemns Moves to Silence Legitimate Critique

This joint Muslim community statement expresses our position with respect to the Abbott Government’s ongoing demonisation of Muslims in Australia, their organisations, their leaders and their values. We – the undersigned Sheikhs, advocates, community leaders, community organisations and student bodies of the Muslim community – make the following points in this regard:

1) We reject the Abbott Government’s predictable use of Muslim affairs and the ‘terror threat’ to attempt to stabilise a fragile leadership and advance its own political agendas.

2) We deplore and denounce the continued public targeting of Muslims through abominable ‘anti-terror’ laws. The laws passed in late 2014 have been used to justify opportunistic raids on Muslim homes, have created media and community hysteria where in the majority of cases no crime was committed, and have created distressing and harmful backlash towards Muslims, especially women and children.

3) We unequivocally reject Prime Minister Abbott’s and his party members’ use of language that portrays Muslims and the Muslim community as a security threat. This narrative threatens social cohesion as it invites suspicion and ill feeling from members of the broader community. The presence of Muslims in Australia as productive contributors to society is not the exception; it is rather the rule.

4) We deplore the undefined and politically expedient use of the words ‘radicalisation’ and ‘extremism’ to criminalise legitimate political discourse and critique of the Government’s policies by members of the Muslim community.

5) We strongly oppose Prime Minster Abbott’s politically convenient threats to ‘tackle’ and ‘crack down’ on Islamic groups such as Hizb ut-Tahrir who disavow and have never supported terrorist acts, and whose only ‘crime’ has been to criticise the Abbott Government’s stance towards Muslims domestically and abroad, as they are well within their rights to do. We also oppose the bullying of Sheikh Dr Ibrahim Abu Muhammad by Mr Abbott for his criticism of Mr Abbott’s attempts to silence individuals’ and organisations’ legitimate criticisms of his policies.

6) We affirm our commitment to robust political and ideological debate and discourse for the betterment of humanity at large. The Abbott Government’s attempts to undermine this brings into question his Government’s commitment to its very own purported values and liberal freedoms.

7) We affirm our concern about peace and security for all. We refuse, however to be lectured on peace-building and harmony by a Government that plays divisive politics, uses fear to elicit uncertainty in the general public, undertakes the oppression of asylum seekers and incarceration of children in detention centres, treats its indigenous population tokenistically, and pledges its explicit support to dictators such as Egypt’s El-Sisi, who continues to brutalise legitimate political opposition to his tyranny.

8) We call on all fair minded Australians, including politicians, journalists, academics, bloggers and others concerned about Australia’s social justice, to continue to scrutinise the Abbott Government’s scare tactics, fear-mongering and political machinations. They do not bode well for societal harmony and only increase the alienation felt and experienced by Australia’s Muslim community. It is time the Abbott Government stopped diverting the attention of the Australian public away from its disastrous domestic and foreign policies by playing the ‘Muslim’ and ‘national security’ card.

    • We need All Muslim groups to have strong statements as the above, the more we shut up and suck up , the more we will cop it.
Don’t use the word (Backlash) we have not done anything to the Australian Community to get a (backlash).
We also need acknowledge there is a war on political Islam

    • Ok, some of the above I agree with. I am not muslim, I am a born Australian. The two communities seem very segregated. I can not see this gap being bridged while all we hear from the muslim community is constant demands for no christmas, easter, sharia law, no valentines or while we see people marching down the streets holding placards calling for beheading of those who insult islam. Im sure this is a minority, but we do not see or hear the remaining muslim community shooting them down, saying they are idiots. We are seeing them as what they portray themselves as….leaders of a bigoted, racist, hate filled group that want to bring to Australia what they claim to be escaping from when they left their homeland because nobody stands up and says NO.

We have accepted you, welcomed you, how about you get involved with the rest of Australia so we can understand each other

    • I am not a member of the Muslim community, nor in fact any religious community. I am one of the white Australians who is meant to be falling for his terror stories hook, line and sinker. But I do not believe a religion with millions of believers can consist entirely of terrorists. That would be insane to believe such nonsense. I’ve come across many lovely Muslim people in day to day life and have never felt them to be any threat to me. I am so sorry that this statement of yours has become necessary.

    • I too fully support this statement. As a revert I have been part of the Muslim community for a year and a friend of Muslims in the community for several years before that and have never met any Muslim who advocated violence or terrorism. Taking action against people with no evidence at all that any of us are committing a crime is a violation of the most fundamental principal of the Australian legal system, the presumption of innocence. It is the act of a government that is ignorant and out of touch.

  18. I absolutely support this statement and unequivocally reject the Abbott Government’s tactics in regards to the Muslim community and the divide they create amongst Australians.
It is time the Abbott Government stopped diverting the attention of the Australian public away from its disastrous domestic and foreign policies by playing the ‘Muslim’ and ‘national security’ card.

  24. I support this statement and reject the Abbott Government’s tactics in regards to the Muslim community. Sarah

  25. I support this statement and reject the Abbott Government’s attempts to exploit the ‘war on terror’ narrative, which demonises Muslims and de-contextualises the role of Western foreign policy as one of the major causes of violence and injustice in the world today. The government is merely attempting to detract the attention away from its own dismal performance.

  26. As a non muslim I support this statement. The muslims in my neighborhood are wonderful neighbors and pillars of the community.I have seen no evidence of “radicalism” or any inclinations towards violence. What I have seen however is an increase in racist behavior towards my neighbors stirred up in no small part by the shrill fearmongering of the government and fascist leaning microparties. In Western Australias history the only terrorism we have endured is from white supremacist groups, notably the ANM in the 1980s and briefly mid 2000s. That threat is still present, and yet one of their prime victims, our muslim aussies , are the ones being targetted, Enough is enough.

  27. I support the right to exercise religious freedom. I am not a part of the Islamic community, but freedom is universal. No religion should be favoured or oppressed in a free, democratic society, or we are no better than what we fight.

  28. I support this statement and reject the Abbott Governments dirty tactics towards the Muslim community.

  55. I fully support the statement and fully reject the Abbott’s tactics of oppressing Muslims in Australia.

  56. I don’t support the Abbott Governments views, however I would like to see the Muslim Community far more vigorous in getting their houses in order. Too often radical elements of the Muslim community are allowed to flourish without open and public condemnation. This lack of action gives the appearance of approval for these minority’s from the mainstream peace loving majority.

  57. I fully support this statement also. I am extremely upset and embarrassed about what Abbott has done. Let’s look forward to a happy future without him soon.

  58. I strongly support the statement and against the Abbott goverment policy in this matter. This policy will create more division in the society and people will have a chance to bias And take advantage over Muslim.

  59. I support this statement and reject the Abbott gorvernment’s tactics in regards to the demonization of Islam and the Muslim community.
I reject double standards. I say equal rights for all Australians

  60. Excellent stance by the Muslim community, I reject such deplorable tactics employed by the Abbott Government.

  61. I support this statement and strongly reject the Abbott government’s tactics in regards to the demonization of Islam and the Muslim community.
I reject double standards and framing of the Muslim community.

  62. As a member of the Australian community not identifying with any particular religion, I feel my safety and well-being are strongly threatened by the Liberal Party, and the Abbott Government in particular. I agree with the above statement as the government’s rhetoric is an insult, not only to Muslims, but to the intelligence of any reasonable person. I pray that the idiotic fashion of holding a section of the community to account for the actions of certain individuals will not prevail.

  63. That statement speaks for me, I’ve heard too much biased double-talk and obfuscation from our Australian government, elected to govern for ALL Australians. I would also like our biased media to give more coverage to advocates of fairness from representatives of the Muslim faith.

  64. I completely with this statement. It is time for Abbott to do things constructively instead of selfish cheap politics. He is not a leader but a divider of the country.

  65. I support this statement and reject the Abbott gorvernment’s tactics in regards to the demonization of Islam and the Muslim community.I reject double standards. I say equal rights for all Australians

  66. I support this statement and reject the Abbott gorvernment’s tactics in regards to the demonization of Islam and the Muslim community.
    I reject double standards.

  67. Praise be to Allah that let’s the Muslim community become united & rejects the open attacks of its enemies with one voice. No to racism, no to discrimination, no to gentrification, no to the beasts of Riba & the sons of Satan.

  68. I support this statement and strongly reject this Far-Right Abbott government in its continued vilification of Muslims in Australia and abroad.
I am ashamed that Abbott is PM.

  69. I support this statement and totally reject the Abbot government’s dirty tactics and increasingly defaming the whole muslim community of this country.

  70. I support this statement. Muslims should get united now . And standup against all negative political criticism and discrimination against them

  71. I fully support this statement, even though I am not Muslim. I am Jewish by birth and demonisation of Muslims by Abbott as well as a number of others, strongly brings to mind demonisation of Jews which happened frequently throughout history. I believe that it is essential for non-Muslims to add their voice to protest against this disasterous policy which undermines the cohesion of Australian society.

  72. I support this statement, and totally reject the Abbott Governments division of this country. We are one and we are many. From all the lands on earth we come. This is what my Australia is about.

  73. I support this statement and reject the Abbott Government’s tactics in regards to the Muslim community. Rawa Osman NSW

  74. Mr abbott you are out of touch misguided about my religion ISLAM. Do your self a favor mate go and by a copy of the holy book and read the english translation, educate yourself and rely on the truth. True islam is not Osama binladen or isis they are thugs and terrorists they are blood thirsty crimnals and should be treated like criminals. We the general muslim community in Australia ( my home for 46 years) do not follow or agree with their so called islam. Your comments are divisive and inconclusive you make statements and generalise, this is un Australian in times of hatred towards muslims you should be uniting and not dividing us and them. Why are you dividing the community into muslim and Non-muslim. You are injecting hatred into the community why? I have lived and continue to live as a muslim within the community which i am outnumbered by i am not sure what percentage it is. The point is no one cared what my religion was and neither did i . Its leaders like you and ppl like andrew bolt that make statements inflaming and turning ppl against one another. As a leader u approach is childish, misinformed and has some degree of arrogance attached. Aussie Aussie is my slogan Mr Abbot

  75. I support this statement and reject the Abbott Government’s tactics in regards to the Muslim community. Mahmoud , Adelaide , SA .

  76. mr abbots approval today is at 38% that means 62% of all aussies reject him and his gov policies and 100% of aussie muslims tottaly reject his biased bigoted and racist rantings . as an 4th generation aust born muslim i am a moderate/practicing law abiding citizen who is insulted on a daily basis due to his current gov anti-islamic 3 faced policies and it is also worth noting that 61% of his liberal party colleages also reject him and his policies ..,we all need to send a clear message to abbot and like minded people that we are ,you are ,all australians, and deserve a fair go .it is the fabric and basis of our anzac tradition and mateship. inciting discrimination on religious and ethnic origions will come back to bite him on his arse. his days are numbered before long malcolm turnbull will replace him as leader . we can only hope that as a moderate politican he will be unifiying leader for all australians, in regards to what is happening in different parts of the world in the name of islam .these misguided ,illiterate people are doing everything that islam and our prophet s.a.w. and his companions had forbidden humanity to do. they are in fact worse than the crusaiders were when they tried to retake the holy lands. the attrocites carried out in the name of christianity and what we are witnessing today have too many similarites. it is a sad fact that anyone and everyone uses islam to justify their criminal ..barbaric.or political agenda. regardless of the affects it has on 99.9% of muslims that totally have no connection with them or their causes. i totally support the statement by our muslim community.

  77. I wholeheartedly support this statement. As an Austrlalian, I do not agree with the government dirty political tactics of demonisation.
